Bowling: Whats the difference between a professional ball and a performance ball?

I will be buying a bowling ball soon and have been looking on websites. There are professional balls and performance balls. Whats the difference and what should I go with. I have been bowling several times a week now.

ok. so i’m not really sure if im right but i think the differenct between the pro.ball and the highpref.ball r:

the professional balls are for certain oil patterns – sport bowling (http://www.bowling.com/productsbycategory.asp?ID=161&categoryname=PBA+Balls+%26+Bags)

what is the site u were looking at?

There really isn’t any difference, the only difference is the terminology that differnent websites use to describe certain balls. A “performance” ball or a “professional” ball will almost certainly be on the higher end of any company’s line of equipment. You may not want to shell out $150-$200 for one of these balls if it is your first ball and you have only been bowling for a few weeks. I would recomend starting with something in the middle. Many sites would call these “mid-priced” or maybe “entry level”. These balls will have a reactive coverstock, not plastic, and will be a good place to start without costing you too much. I would suggest something from Brunswick’s “Groove” line as a starter.

Only difference is that the “professional” line of bowling balls by any of the manufacturers will have a little more advanced core shape, pin placement and more aggressive coverstock that are not found in the retail bowling equipment sold to the public. That way, the professionals will have an easier way to drill their equipment more exotically and can tackle the more difficult professional oil patterns that we do not need to master in our normal house condition bowling leagues.

For the most part, the “professional” bowling balls sold on retail websites are aggressive enough for pros and amateurs.

The main difference is cost, but other from that, pro balls move better on certain oil patterns, while performance balls vary from each oil pattern to the next
